Sonas Woodbridge – Valentines Day

At Sonas, during Valentine’s Day themed experiences, children engaged in three sensory and creative activities: a Valentine water tuff tray, a rice sensory tuff tray, and card-making through painting.

In the water tuff tray, children explored red and pink coloured water with heart-shaped glitters and petals. They poured, filled and transferred water between containers, experimenting with volume and movement. Some children used descriptive language such as “full,” “empty,” and “overflowing.” Others worked collaboratively, taking turns and negotiating space.

In the rice tuff tray, coloured rice in red, pink and white tones was provided alongside scoops, heart petals and small containers. Children demonstrated focus while scooping, pouring and hiding objects within the rice. Some created pretend “cakes” or “gifts,” engaging in imaginative play and conversations about giving to family members.

During the card-making activity, children used paint, and sponges to decorate Valentine’s cards. They explored colour mixing, made marks and patterns, and expressed who they were making cards. Children showed pride in their creations and eagerly shared their finished cards.

Analysis

These Valentine-themed experiences supported multiple areas of development.

The water and rice sensory trays promoted sensory exploration, early mathematical concepts (volume, capacity, measurement), and fine motor development through scooping, pouring and grasping tools. Children developed hand strength and coordination while also strengthening social skills such as sharing and cooperative play.

The sensory materials encouraged open-ended exploration, supporting curiosity and problem-solving. Children experimented with cause and effect (what happens when I pour too fast?) and demonstrated sustained concentration.

The card painting activity supported creative expression, emotional development and communication skills. By discussing who they were creating cards for, children strengthened their sense of belonging and relationships. The activity provided opportunities for children to express affection and understand concepts of kindness and care.

Fine motor skills were further enhanced through brush control, grip and hand movements, supporting future writing development. The creative process also built confidence and independence as children made individual design choices.
