This week at Sonas Atwell the children and educators acknowledged the important role firefighters have within our community. We discussed fire safety and practised the stop, drop and roll.  Together the educators and children discussed the emergency number. The educators posed “what number do we call in a fire emergency?” to which the children responded, “we call 0-0-0,” while demonstrating the zero using their hands.

The learning continued as the children participated in a help extinguish the fire cooperation game. The children filled recycled water bottles with water and proceeded to spray the pretend fire painted on the trough. “Fire, fire, fire, move away,” said the children while focusing on their target and squeezing the bottles, strengthening their hand muscles.  Through discussion, negotiation and turn-taking the children worked together to extinguish the pretend fire. Well done everyone!
