How to make a paper worm 🐛 that grows in water?
We Roll the paper around a pencil to make it look like a worm. Scrunch each side together and then we removed it from the pencil. We added eyes and a mouth with a permanent marker to make a face. We then placed our paper worms into a tray of water and used a syringe for making the worm grow and become colourful! Wow we were so excited to see the worm grow and move through the water. It took us back to the very hungry caterpillar book we have been reading for Book Week.
The walking rainbow 🌈
The water moves up the paper towels through a process called capillary action. The paper towel is made from fibres and the water can travel through the gaps in the fibres. The gaps in the paper towel act like capillary tubes and pull the water upward. This is what helps water climb from a plant’s roots to the leaves at the top of the plant or tree.
The water can move upward against gravity because of the attractive forces between the water and the fibres in the paper towel. Placing each piece of paper towel into a coloured cup of water we got to slowly watch as the paper towel changed colour and created a rainbow 🌈
