Our Garden enabled us to stumble across a snail slowly creeping along the fence. This quickly became a treasure hunt with children carrying buckets and weaving themselves in and among the bushes and shrubs, searching here and there, some up high, others down low in search for more. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find any more so we put a call out to our families to see if they could assist and they did not disappoint.

In our STEM studio we researched and learnt about snails, looking at their features such as they crawl along using their very large foot, their shells come in various shapes, colours and sizes and they have 4 antennae to help them feel their way along their travels and they leave a trail behind them. We discussed other creatures that too carry their homes on their backs.

In our Arts Studio, the children were given the opportunity to paint an image of a snail and sculpt their own snail from clay. Clay manipulation gave the children an experience where they could squish, squeeze, pound and press the clay, strengthening their small and gross motor skills and developing their dexterity and  creativeness.

The children’s artwork is proudly displayed in our foyer to share with our friends and family of Sonas.
