Following up on our topic of ‘proper handwashing’, our children participated in a ‘bread experience’.

After playing outside in the morning, our hands were full of little germs. We decided to put our handwashing to the test and pressed one ‘dirty’ hand to one slice of bread. Then one of our friends washed their hands and pressed their freshly cleaned hands on another slice.

After washing hands, we sanitised our hands and pressed a hand on another slice of bread. We put all three slices in sandwich bags to observe in the next couple of days.

All our children were curious and raised their guesses on which slice would mould first and let the germs grow. We will revisit the slices throughout the week and discuss our handwashing procedure with the children.

This experience enhances their self-help skills and sense of responsibility for their own health.
