This week we celebrated St Patrick’s Day on Thursday.

To show our respect and help celebrate this tradition with our cook, her daughter and other families who have an Irish background we created some experiences to help celebrate this special day with them.

In the morning we gathered in the yard and explored some goop. Goop is made out of corn flour and water, we added some green food colouring to represent the green of the shamrock.

The children expressed their thoughts about the goop using their language development skills, by communicating that it was sticky and yucky as it ran off their fingers back into the sensory tray.

This experience also promoted the children in using their senses as they explored, Sensory experiences promote and foster the children with their learning by:

  • Helping to build nerve connections in the brain.
  • It encourages the development of fine and gross motor skills.
  • It supports language development.
  • It encourages ‘scientific thinking’ and problem solving.
  • It can involve mindful experiences, which benefit the children.
