To continue exploring shapes and their appearance in the world, we used sponges to create pictures using shapes.

There were many shapes cut out from sponges and some pre-made ones.

After our mat session about shapes and how they appear in the world, we moved to the tables to continue and extend this understanding.

The children used paint and sponges to create collaborative art work; some preferred random art, others attempted to create scenes. This was noted as developmental for each group of children. Using sponges to create shapes with paint is a fun and engaging activity for children that promotes creativity and fine motor skills.

This hands-on approach allows kids to explore various shapes, such as circles, squares, and stars, by dipping sponges into colourful paint and pressing them onto paper.

As they experiment with different shapes and colours, children enhance their artistic expression and learn about colour mixing and layering. Additionally, this activity helps develop hand-eye coordination and dexterity as they manipulate the sponges.

It’s an excellent way to incorporate shape recognition into art, making learning playful and interactive.
