The children of Sonas Bayswater celebrated NAIDOC Week and learned all about the culture of indigenous peoples through a sensory tray with red, yellow, and black rice as well as Aboriginal symbol flash cards.

They absolutely loved the layout of the tray, and they all sat down together in wonder to explore. They viewed and showed us educators and each other the symbol flash cards. They used their senses to feel the textures, see the colours, and hear the sounds that the rice had made.

While they played, I named the colours and explained that they are the colours of the Aboriginal flag, and I named each symbol on the flash cards for them, repeating myself a few times to imbed them in memory and encourage them to repeat the words I’ve said.

Learning Outcomes: The children are gaining important knowledge of indigenous culture, learning cultural respect, expanding their vocabulary by introducing new words to learn, engaging their senses to explore and respond to their world, and increasing their language skills through communication and social interactions with familiar educators and one another.
