Since the beginning of Covid we have taken extra precaution when it comes to hygiene at day care and are constantly reminding the children of the importance of hand washing throughout the day.
To extend on this, we planned a sensory experience using milk, food colouring and hand soap to show the children how washing our hands with soap eliminates germs.
In this experience, the children were encouraged to dip their finger in the hand soap before poking it into the food dye drops, we had placed into a tray of milk.
This creates a reaction that causes the fat particles in the milk to move and create swirls of colour. We discussed how the coloured drops represent the germs on our hands and when germs come in contact with soap, they can be washed away.
This creates a visual representation to help better the children’s understanding on why we should be washing hands regularly, especially with the current pandemic.
We used a milk alternative for our dairy free friends to support everyone participating in this activity.
