Mother's Day Crafts Your Toddler Can Actually Make

Mother's Day Crafts Your Toddler Can Actually Make
Reading time: 5 minutes
Mother's Day in Australia falls on the second Sunday of May, and if you've got a toddler, you know the deal — the best gifts aren't bought, they're made. But let's be honest: most "toddler craft" ideas you find online require a level of fine motor skill and attention span that no actual toddler possesses. You end up doing 90% of the work while your child eats the glue.
This guide is different. These are Mother's Day crafts that toddlers can genuinely participate in — messy, imperfect, and absolutely beautiful because of it. Whether you're a dad, grandparent, or educator looking for ideas, these work at home or at daycare.
At Sonas Woodbridge, our Arts Studio is buzzing with Mother's Day creations every May. Our educators know the secret: the best toddler crafts are process-focused. The child does the work. The love is in the little fingerprints and wobbly lines.
1. Handprint Flower Bouquet
Ages: 12 months+ What you need: Paper, non-toxic paint, a paintbrush, green card or pipe cleaners
How to do it:
- Paint your toddler's hand in their chosen colour (or several — the more colours the better).
- Press their hand onto paper to create a flower shape. Repeat 3-5 times.
- Once dry, cut out the handprints and attach them to green "stems" made from card or pipe cleaners.
- Arrange in a small jar or vase, or glue onto a large piece of card as a bouquet.
Why toddlers love it: Hands in paint. Need we say more?
2. Fingerprint Heart Card
Ages: 12 months+ What you need: Card folded in half, non-toxic ink pad or paint, a pen (for adult to write message)
How to do it:
- Open the card and draw a light heart outline in pencil on the front.
- Let your toddler press their finger onto the ink pad and stamp fingerprints all along the heart outline and inside it.
- Once dry, write a message inside: "These tiny fingerprints are just for you, Mum. Happy Mother's Day. Love, [child's name]."
Why it works: It's genuinely made by the child, and it becomes a keepsake that captures how tiny their fingers were at this age.
3. Painted Plant Pot
Ages: 18 months+ What you need: A small terracotta pot, non-toxic acrylic paint, paintbrushes, a small plant or herb
How to do it:
- Let your toddler paint the pot however they like. Abstract? Wonderful. All one colour? Also wonderful.
- Once dry, plant a small herb (rosemary, basil, or a succulent) inside.
- Add a small label: "I made this grow, just like you helped me grow. Happy Mother's Day."
Why it's great: It's a functional gift that lasts. Every time Mum uses the herb or waters the plant, she'll think of her little artist.
4. Photo Frame with Textured Border
Ages: 2 years+ What you need: Thick cardboard cut into a frame shape, glue, decorating materials (buttons, shells, dried pasta, fabric scraps, sequins), a photo of the child
How to do it:
- Cut a frame from thick cardboard (adult job).
- Let your toddler glue decorations all over the frame border. The messier and more eclectic, the better.
- Once dry, attach a favourite photo of the child (or the child and Mum) to the back so it shows through the centre.
Why toddlers love it: Gluing things onto other things is peak toddler satisfaction.
5. Scribble Art Wrapping Paper
Ages: 12 months+ What you need: Large sheets of plain butcher's paper or newsprint, crayons, markers, or paint
How to do it:
- Roll out a large sheet of paper on the floor or tape it to a table.
- Give your toddler crayons, markers, or paint and let them go to town. Scribbles, dots, lines — all of it is art.
- Use the decorated paper to wrap another gift, or frame a piece of the scribble art itself.
Why it's clever: Your toddler creates unique wrapping paper AND a gift in one activity.
6. Love Bug
Ages: 18 months+ What you need: An egg carton, paint, googly eyes, pipe cleaners, glue
How to do it:
- Cut a section of egg carton (2-3 cups connected) for the bug's body.
- Let your toddler paint it in their favourite colour.
- Once dry, help them glue on googly eyes and poke pipe cleaner antennae through the top.
- Write on the bottom or on a tag: "I love you, Mum! — Your little love bug."
Why kids love it: It's a creature. Toddlers are obsessed with creatures.
7. "All About My Mum" Interview
Ages: 3 years+ (with adult transcribing) What you need: Paper, a pen, crayons for the child to illustrate
How to do it: Ask your child these questions and write down their answers exactly as given:
- My mum's name is...
- She is ___ years old. (Prepare for hilarious answers.)
- Her favourite food is...
- She's really good at...
- I love my mum because...
- My mum is as pretty as a...
Let the child draw a portrait of Mum at the bottom. Frame it.
Why it's the best: The answers are always wonderfully honest and funny. "My mum is 100 years old" and "She's really good at yelling" are genuine classics. Mums cherish these for years.
How Sonas Woodbridge Celebrates Mother's Day
At Sonas Woodbridge, Mother's Day is one of our favourite celebrations. In the weeks leading up, our Arts Studio is filled with little hands creating keepsake gifts — handprint cards, painted pots, and "All About My Mum" interviews with our Pathfinders.
We also host a special Mother's Day morning tea at the centre, inviting mums (and grandmothers, aunties, and all the special women in our children's lives) to join us in The Family Room for treats, songs, and presentations from the children. It's emotional, chaotic, and absolutely beautiful.
