I created a spontaneous sensory tray based on the children’s interest in sea animals.

I used blue water and some sand, adding in a few pieces of cellophane to mimic “rubbish” in our waters and ocean.

Children grasped tongs and used their fine motor skills and pincer grip to grasp the rubbish they found in the water (ocean) and place it into the given containers.

As a team, educators and children spoke about what we were doing and why we needed to clean up the rubbish from our waters and environments to ensure we could keep our animals, planet, and humans safe.

Analysis of learning:

Fine motor skills
Discussion about the world we live in
Language skills
Cognitive skills
