To start our celebration with Australia Day on Thursday, we begin by reading books about Australia. Before we read the book we talked about what is Australia Day. We sat on the mat and Charina explained it to the children.

January 26 is Australia Day, which is our National Day. This is when the First Fleet arrived in Australia in 1788. Chelsey asked what is a fleet? Charina then explained to the children that a fleet is a ship and the captain of the ship, First Fleet, was James Cook. He was the one who found Australia! He declared it in Terra Nullis, which means unclaimed land or land belonging to nobody. Cooper said he must be really really old now or maybe dead now. Charina said to Cooper that James Cook is already dead and he was killed by a bad man who stabbed him really hard.

After our discussion, we read the book “Our Australia” It is all about our beautiful country. Children were able to learn about the famous people and inventor that are famous around the world. The famous foods we eat with our families, the sports we play and the different celebrations we celebrate as one. Children were also able to learn about the map of Australia and the different beautiful places we have.

Everyone had fun reading books about Australia and everyone had the chance to share their ideas and experiences with their friends.
