Following on from the amazing milk and colour experience we completed last week we have been exploring and experimenting with colours and what happens when you mix certain colours together and the results we can achieve.

Our children have learned that the primary colours are yellow and blue and red by mixing these colours we can produce different colours. The children discovered that when we mix red and yellow we get orange, red and blue will give us purple paint and blue with yellow will give us green paint, and mixing all the colours turns it into an interesting shade of colour.

Some of the benefits of colour mixing:

Develops creativity
Learning the mixing of colours helps children to develop creativity. They tend to explore and experiment with different colours in order to create a new colour. Most importantly, children come up with interesting colour combinations to get new colours for their artwork.

Enhances learning experience
While mixing colours, children learn a lot about colours and the process of mixing colours. Also, children learn to recognise and name primary, secondary and tertiary colours correctly. This will help them to enhance their learning experience.

Develops observational skills
With the help of a colour mixing chart for kids, children learn to combine different colours to get a new colour. While mixing colours, they tend to observe the changes of colour turning into a completely different one. This helps them to develop observational skills.

Improves concentration
When children try to combine colours, they completely immerse themselves in colouring. They like to concentrate on colours and how it changes into a new colour.

Learning about colours links in with The Learning Outcomes:

1.1   Children approach new safe situations with confidence.
1.3   Children are open to new challenges and discoveries.
4.1   Children developed dispositions for learning such as curiosity – cooperation, confidence, creativity, commitment, enthusiasm, persistence, imagination, and reflexivity.
