This week, our children participated in a programmed experience of our SAFE 4 KIDS, concept 9: “strangers.”.

We all gathered on our mat to discuss the meaning and differences between an assertive no and an emergency no. The educators prompted the children with scenarios and asked the group which version we would need to use in these situations.

This then transitioned into how we need to say no, ensuring that when we need to say an assertive no, we need to make sure it sounds and looks assertive. Educators Tiana and Cherie demonstrated a scenario prompting an assertive no to be used, which was demonstrated as seemingly shy and quiet.

The children were then questioned as to whether this was a good enough no and, if not, why it was not good. Our group was able to identify that the no was not loud enough and did not seem confident when it was being said.

After this scenario, the children were then grouped up into pairs, where they then attempted their own assertive no where they would come up Infront of the group and demonstrate how to do it.

Once all of the children had their go in this experience, we transitioned this into a group attempt, using phrases such as:

“Superman pose / hands on our hips”
“Hand out straight.”
“Confident and loud no!”
