Today we made a sensory water play with flowers and leaves. Before we start, we sat on the ground used our senses to explore the flowers and the leaves before we put them in water. Each child will have a turn to smell, feel and touch and look closely the flowers, leaves and branches.

The children said the flowers smell nice and they asked their Educator what kind of flower it is. The Educator said it’s a lavender plant and one friend said the flower is colour purple and purple is her sister’s favourite colour. Another friend said the leaves are green. When everyone had their turn exploring them using their senses, the children filled up the tray with water using their buckets. Then, when the tray is full of water, we put the leaves and flowers and the children start exploring them.

Sensory play is the type of activity that stimulates children’s senses which are the different ways we perceive the world. Our brains use senses to help us maneuver in our surroundings and sensory play helps children develop them. The five most commonly known senses are taste, smell, sight, touch, and sound.
