This week we explored the concept of sink or float.

The sink or float experiment teaches toddlers and preschoolers about density and buoyancy. This play-based learning activity combines a science activity and a water activity, and for some extra fun.

The children experimented with this concept by practically testing different size, material and weighted objects in water.  Objects float when the weight force on the object is balanced by the upward push of the water on the object. The upwards push of the water increases with the volume of the object that is under water; it is not affected by the depth of the water or the amount of water.

It was great to see the children be so engaged in hypothesising which items would rise and sink in the water tray.
